The charming Lisbon – Lisbon, Estremadura, P...

Lisbon, Estremadura, Portugal

We arrived in Lisbon from the small fishing village, Cascais—just West of the city. It was late afternoon when I made it to Lisbon.

Lisbon was destroyed in 1755 by three calamities. First a large earthquake, followed by fires and ending with a large tidal wave. There are a few buildings remaining that survived, but almost all of Lisbon has been built after 1755.

The city is covered in trams that were built in the 1920s and are still in operation today. They add a charming touch to the city as they rattle along the winding city streets, narrowly missing pedestrians and parked cars. We rode a few of the trams and just spent the evening wandering around until returning to the yacht for the evening.

BOOK IT! At least for a day! – Denver, Color...

Denver, Colorado, United States

We started our sightseeing in Downtown Denver at lunchtime.  We grabbed some very yummy BLTs from The Market on Larimer Street and enjoyed them in their outside dining area.  We then checked into a fun boutiquey type hotel named The Curtis.  Each floor of the hotel has a theme so it can be a little fun to make a stop at each floor on the elevator to see what it says!  It is in a
very accessible & walkable location to the downtown & Lodo area.  What first appealed to me about this hotel was the name.  As my husband’s name is Curtis I just really thought he’d get a kick out of it.  I snagged a great deal on this hotel too, which really sealed the deal for me!  It was their “crazy 8″ special on hotelbook.com – I found the amazing deal via Kayak.com.

When we reached our room Curt began searching the hotel for any “Curtis” items he could find…he managed to snag The Curtis toiletries, which are now showcased in our guest bath, notepaper, pens, and “If this sign is a rockin’, don’t come a knockin – The Curtis” door signs.

After check in we went out to explore Denver and made stops at The State Capitol, Civic Center Park, The Denver Pavillion, 16th Street Mall and the Tattered Cover Bookstore.  After all the walking we were famished and found dinner at Lime. Soooo YUMMY!  I’m begining to salvate as I think of their amazing chips (think taco salad bowl) and fantastic tacos!  The Margaritas weren’t too shabby either!  Dinnerpretty much concluded our trip as we had an early flight to catch, but
I’m sure it won’t be the last time we go to Colorado!

Chicago. The Windy City. – Chicago, Illinois...

Chicago, Illinois, United States

Ahhhh Chicago. So big. So much to see and do. I don’t even know where to start and I feel like my 3 days here can’t even do the city justice.

I finally arrived in Chicago after 14 long hours on the Greyhound. It felt like we stopped at every town in between Toronto and Chicago and I actually think we did! There must have been at least 15 stops. As well as the stop at the Canada/US border. They’re so aggressive there! The US guy got on our bus and said “Everyone off the bus and inside with all your luggage!” in a tone that suggested he had already asked us twice and we had refused to move.

A sweet lady sat next to me on the bus all the way from Toronto to Chicago. I knew from the way she smiled and nodded at me without saying anything when she sat down, that she didn’t speak English. And probably not French either since she would probably just start talking in French and assume that I could speak it. I found out pretty early on that she was from Peru. The poor lady didn’t speak a word of English. She was trying to ask me if we were going all the way to Chicago in this bus or if we had to change, and it took me a couple of goes to realise she was speaking Spanish! I was happy to be able to practice Spanish, as it has gone down hill considerably since I started learning French at camp. And she was so excited that she was sitting next to her own personal translator. I told her everything the bus driver was saying and we chatted about this and that. She even gave me a hug goodbye when we got off the bus at the Chicago bus station!

Mission Accomplished – Twin Falls, Idaho, Un...

Twin Falls, Idaho, United States

My Mom and Dad met at the Boise Courthouse in 1936 and eloped to Cascade in March of 1937.  I wanted to go to the courthouse in Cascade and get a copy of their marriage license.  The drive up through the high, bare mountains followed along the Payette Rive.  At times the river was quiet as a pond and around the next corner it was crashing white water.  The bare mountains turned into Pine forests  after about an hour’s drive.   I tried to image my parents cuddling in the car listening to the raging river and heading for the courthouse.  It was a long squat, single story building of brick.  I had imagine something more majestic.ov

After leaving Cascade I headed for Twin Falls for the night.  The wide bare valleys were seldom broken up by green agriculture and off in the violet distance, broken looking bluffs beckoned.  Going along the highway into Twin Falls, the road became a bridge over a deep gorge containing a small valley cut by the Snake River.  it was so far down below, it looked like a miniature landscape.  Fascinating terrain here in south idaho.

President Obama is facing mounting calls to intervene and give the health care reform debate a second chance at

attracting broad-based support, by introducing his own bill.

FOXNews.com

Monday, August 31, 2009

With public support waning, President Obama is at a
ed hardy clothing crossroads on health care reform: Does

he attempt to breathe life into Congress’ efforts or do something more drastic — offer his own solution?

The president faces these questions as Congress returns next week from a summer recess which by most accounts took a

heavy toll on reform legislation.

And a growing number of lawmakers, analysts and newspapers are suggesting Congress start from scratch, and that

Obama take charge by introducing his own bill.

“I think the only way the president can turn the public debate around and win over a lot of scared, confused people

is to put forward his own plan, and to spend the time and capital necessary to explain it,” said Democratic

strategist Dan Gerstein. “There needs ed hardy shoesto be an Obama plan. … One of the biggest mistakes the president made was

subcontracting this to Congress.”

While the president has played the role of cheerleader-in-chief for health care reform and submitted his own

guidelines for legislation, he left the work of writing and negotiating the bill to the House and Senate.

This effort has led to splits in the Democratic Party, particularly in the House, over the cost of the bill and the

inclusion of a government-run insurance plan. Meanwhile, the prolonged negotiations offered an opening for critics

to mount aggressive campaigns against ed hardy swimwearthe most liberal versions of the bill. These criticisms no doubt played a role

in the heated nature of town hall meetings held across the country in which constituents fumed about the package —

sometimes citing legitimate concerns, and sometimes citing misconceptions about the bill that were pushed by

critics.

Hopes for a bipartisan plan now rest with a single committee in the Senate where progress is in question — the

alternative is for Democrats to ram through what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid describes as a “partisan” bill.

Enter Obama?

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole said Monday that Obama should have Democratic leaders introduce his version

of a bill when they return from recess.

“It ought to be the Obama bill, and I believe it would really be beneficial to him,” he told FOX News. “We shouldn’t

be debating some congressman’s bill.”

Dole, who called Obama;s strategy so ed

hardy tanksfar a “tactical error that could be corrected,” first pushed the idea in a column Monday.

Analysts have long noted that Obama kept his distance from the legislative process in a clear attempt to avoid the

mistakes of the Clinton administration, which was criticized for micro-managing its failed attempt at health care

legislation. To take the legislative reins away from House and Senate Democrats at this point would also be a

stunning rebuke to the president’s own party.

But Dole said Obama’s approval ratings would jump if he got more involved and took charge, and that such a

turnaround could produce a “bipartisan ending” that Americans would support.

Asked about the suggestion, White
prada shoes House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs defended the role the

president has played to date, saying he’s met with key House and Senate leaders on the legislation along with

pushing his own principles for the bill.

“To characterize the role the president is playing as inactive would be inaccurate,” Gibbs said.

Another option for Obama is to embrace one of the bills on the table, something he has not yet done.

Gerstein said that if the Senate Finance Committee, the last of five committees to consider the legislation, reaches

a compromise Obama could move the debate forward by embracing that version — a version that may not include the

controversial “public option.”

But Gerstein noted that those deliberations are in doubt.

Over the weekend, Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., one of three Republican negotiators working with three Democrats on that

version, slammed Democrats in the prada

leatherRepublicans’ weekly radio address.

He accused Democrats of trying to “rush” a bill through and failing to control costs.

Such statements do little to engender a sense of harmony in the delicate Senate negotiations.

If that effort at compromise fails, some lawmakers have pushed for the Senate to ram through a bill using a

legislative maneuver informally called the “nuclear option,” which would allow Democrats to pass the bill with a

smaller majority than usual.

Republicans bristle at that possibility.

House Minority Leader John Boehner said in a recent statement that instead, Obama and congressional Democrats should

“scrap this costly plan” and start over.

Some Democrats see this as a non-starter. Another option for Obama is to simply cross his fingers, continue to

broadly promote health care reform principles and hope Congress can hammer out a pass-able deal by the end of the

year — or let the bills die and returnprada sneakers to

fight for it next year.

But Jason Schechter, former spokesman for President Clinton, said nobody should be signing the death certificate on

health care reform.

“I don’t think it’s quite as dire as it seems like it’s been over the past few weeks,” he said, urging patience for

the work of the Senate Finance Committee.

“There’s been a tough road to bipartisanship,” he said. “I wouldn’t say that bipartisanship is dead.”

entry 9: Montreal – Montreal, Quebec, Canada...

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

8pm Monday 31/8

Picking up from where I left off… I got a taxi to the hostel, got shown around and given directions and a few ideas about what I could do with my time here in Montreal. Then I went for a stroll down to old Montreal or ‘Vieux-Montreal’ because I was interested in checking that out and wanted to grab some dinner. It’s kind of similar to parts of Quebec but not nearly as pretty. Oh but I found a nice little cafe that served some great stuff- I had some cauliflower salad and the best zucchini pie ever. I know this sounds weird but every mouthful of that pie was just so delicious, even when I was full I kept eating it. It sort of melted in the mouth but it was zesty with a slight lemon flavour. Ahh I’ll be going back for some more of that.

Back to the real story; the man who ran the cafe was so lovely to me and gave me a great tourist book with some maps of different parts of the city and told me about some places to go, how to get around, etc. So that was really helpful. I already had a map from the hostel but it’s one of those massive ones you have to unfold and hold out in front of you with straight arms and of course I feel so silly taking it out. When I was in Riviere-du-Loup I had a big one like that and whenever I got it out and I was on the street someone would stop and ask if I needed help! Anyway I had a bit of a walk around, used the subway, went to check out the main shopping street, Ste Catherine, seeing as it was late night shopping on Fridays. Didn’t stay very long though, went back to the hostel to Skype :)

Next day, Saturday, started out cloudy and miserable looking and proceeded to pour down most of the afternoon. Not fun. In the morning I went to the science museum they have here. It was really different. They had this whole exhibit about water that was quite good and even made me want to try harder to save water and be thankful that we have such clean drinking water. I went to most exhibits and a lot of it was very interactive and interesting but then I got kind of restless and decided I needed to do something else.

After I stopped and had a yummy crepe for lunch, it was shopping time! However the idea of it was better than the reality. I just window shopped and browsed mostly because I feel like I can’t buy anything because I can’t afford it and I don’t have any room to pack it. I would have loved to buy some boots, but I’m sure the same shops are in Guelph or Toronto so it can wait. Basically I just walked around and decided on all the things I was going to buy later. It was hard. Oh and it’s annoying that so many shops are the same. Like some shops are literally on every block and in every mall and you could walk past up to maybe six of one shop in the space of an hour. Sometimes I didn’t realise until I’d gone in, and I’m thinking, “hmm I just saw this dress in that other shop… oh hang on, this is the same shop, only 5 doors down!”

I decided to go to the movies later because there really wasn’t much else to do in that weather. I saw ‘Post Grad’, a movie with Alexis Bledel who plays a girl (very similar to the character of Rory on Gilmore Girls) who’s just finished college and she misses out on her dream job and she doesn’t have a backup plan, so she has to move back home. And there’s a guy who’s her friend who’s in love with her and the whole thing is quite predictable; but then there was her crazy family who made the movie quite enjoyable. So I came out of that cinema and in the one next door ‘Julie and Julia’ is about to start- they have a screen out the front of each one saying the movie and time. So I thought why not? And I went and saw that as well. So glad I did, I really enjoyed it! Meryl Streep was hilarious. Two movies for the price of one, a bit naughty I know, but it was too easy so I just had to!

Yesterday, Sunday, I went to the amusement park here, La Ronde. It was a lot of waiting around in lines of course but big thrills. I went on the biggest rollercoaster I have ever been on, twice. I didn’t take any photos while I was there and I wish now that I had but it was a fairly standard amusement park. They had probably four rollercoasters that were very similar to each other though, and lots of spinning rides that I hate so I didn’t spend ages there. I did manage to get a great sandwich which was a surprise because usually all they have at those places is crap like hotdogs, pizza and French fries.

Next I went to visit the Notre-Dame Basilica. It’s the first church in Montreal and one of the biggest tourist attractions the city has so I had to go. It was so beautiful, the colours and the detail in the architecture were amazing. Oh and the wedding chapel was just gorgeous, it almost makes me want to get married in a church. I’m going back there tomorrow night for a ‘light show’. Not sure exactly what it’s going to be like but thought I’d better see what all the fuss is about.

Next I went to Mont Royal; the other biggest tourist attraction and the name sake of Montreal. It’s not a very big mountain but its right in the middle of the city and the cross at the very top is visible from most parts of the city. The metro station isn’t very close so I had to walk down Mont Royal Avenue where I was tempted and then gave in and had another crepe. They are just so yum! I should really be able to order them in French after all those years of the crepe man coming to school but I just feel so much more comfortable speaking in English. I’m chicken. So I carried the crepe the rest of the way to the park, had a few nibbles, it was hard not to. When I got there I found there was some kind of festivities going on, lots of people playing drums and dancing about, and people selling things on blankets. So I sat down and just took it all in. Then I set off up to the lookout and who should I run in to? Lee! Yes, my Melbourne buddy Lee from Salty Bear. So we caught up with each other and she invited me out to an improv night that her and some people for her hostel were going to. I was so glad to have something to do and with someone I knew; it was great!

I continued on to the lookout and it was a fantastic view of the city and the bridges and the river (Montreal is an island) and in the distance I could even a storm coming in. I stayed up there a while, took lots of photos, then figured I needed to get going so I could have dinner and get ready to go out. Also I was thinking I need to beat the rain. I didn’t- it was pouring down by the time I was down the bottom of the park and the whole time I walked to the station and to the hostel. Oh well, I had my rain jacket, I just don’t like wearing it because the hood is too big and falls down over my eyes.

Luckily the rain had cleared when I was walking to the theatre for improve night. Improv was really funny. There were 10 actors numbered 0 to 9 and someone called different combinations of numbers and those actors got up on stage and they were given various challenges and scenes, much like ‘whose line is it anyway?’ I suppose. Each scene was scored by cheering from the audience and each round some actors were eliminated and in there was one left standing. He didn’t win anything; it was all just for fun. Then Lee and I went and some random tag along guy went to a bar for a chat and a few drinks. Lee and I figured out we’ll both be in Toronto on Wednesday so we’re going to meet up again then.

So today was my third day here in Montreal, but the first day of total sunshine! It was nice. And tomorrow is looking to be good too, so that’s a relief. Today the plan was to go to the Olympic stadium and tower, the Biodome, and the Botanical gardens as these are all in the one place- just get off the subway and you can walk to any of them. Unfortunately what I didn’t know was that there was some kind of strike today and so for one day the Biodome and the gardens were closed. It was such a shame but I’ll be going back there tomorrow! I did go up the tower to the observatory and have a tour of the stadium though so it wasn’t a totally pointless trip. It’s the largest leaning tower in the world and was built to hold up the roof of the stadium. The stadium is designed with supports only on the outside of the structure so every seat inside has a clear view. Because of this it can only hold the weight of the stands, not a roof. The view’s not bad from the top but the windows needed a clean- probably because of the rain the last couple of days. The tour was good, the guide was a bit strange, he kept throwing in ridiculous facts to keep us on our toes; such as the kiddy pool in the swim centre was used for under-3 events.

Later, after having a bit more of a walk around outside the stadium, I went and grabbed some food and a milkshake from my fav cafe in old Montreal. I wrote a couple of postcards and then decided to go for another walk up Mont Royal. I couldn’t really think of anything else to do! It was nice though, I went to a different lookout; one on the side of a road meant more for cars, but you can walk there through the park. On the way back to the hostel, stopped to get something from the supermarket for dinner and decided on a whim I would walk back to the hostel. It never seems like it’s very far between stations and the one I get off at is still a bit of a walk anyway. Turned out it was a further than I thought. But I’d started, so I kept going. The amount of walking I’ve done this last month, I thought I would feel fitter, but I still feel like I’m huffing and puffing and I’m so tired. It’s a quiet night in with my laptop tonight… And early to bed because I’ve got a big day tomorrow!

Swine flu panic grips nation – China, Maine,...

China, Maine, United States

Swine flu panic has gripped the country as the one person died of the deadly disease on Sunday night and many more

are getting infected with the H1N1 virus, responsible for the disease, everyday.
The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Monday confirmed death of Mitali Chakraborty

(35) of Savar, who was undergoing treatment at private Lab Aid Hospital in the city after being tested positive for

the virus on August 27.
According to the institute, the number of swine flu cases rose to 213 since the first case was reported on June 18

this year with 14 more people tested positive for H1N1 virus on Monday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the global spread of swine flu will endanger more lives as it

speeds up in coming months and governments must boost preparations for a swift response.
A physician at Lab Aid Hospital said Mitali was a Patek

Philippe watchesswine flu patient in critical condition and died at around 10.30 pm on Sunday night. “She was

also suffering from other diseases,” he said.
Earlier, Mitali was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital, a hospital at Savar, on August 16 with fever and later

shifted to Lab Aid Hospital. She was taking anti-viral drugs after being tested positive for H1N1 virus.
The death came a day after officials said the country’’s alert level might be raised from 2 to 3, signalling an

epidemic.
The official announcement regarding death of Mitali came after Prime Minister’’s health affairs adviser Prof Syed

Modasser Ali held a meeting with IEDCR officials on Monday.
According to IEDCR, the government has supplied anti-viral drugs to some state-run hospitals and some private

hospitals for swine flu treatment.
“Currently, the government has a stock of 29 lakh Oseltamivir capsules to treat around three lakh patients,” said

IEDCR director Prof Mahmudur Rahman. “The drug is Vacheron

Constantin watchesneeded for a few patients. In most cases, the patients recover without the drug.
What is needed the most is to keep a patient isolated to contain the spread of the virus,” he said.
Some pharmaceutical companies in the country, including Beximco, Eskayef and Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd, have

started manufacturing Oseltamivir with the brand name of Ose Flu, SK Flu and Oselta respectively.
Globally, Roche is producing the drug with the brand name Tamiflu.
The ingredients for producing the drug are same for all companies, said experts.
The government said a total of 12 hospitals are under surveillance, while 15 are ready for providing treatment to

swine flu patients immediately.
WHO said there would soon be a period of further global spread of the virus, and most countries may see swine flu

cases double every three to four days for several Rado watchesmonths

until peak transmission is reached.
International attention has focused on how the pandemic is progressing in southern hemisphere countries such as

Australia, which are experiencing winter and their flu season.
WHO earlier estimated that as many as two billionOris watches people

could become infected over the next two years – nearly one-third of the world’’s population.
