The culture thing — Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia

I booked out of the hotel and went to spend 2 nights with the family of a couchsurfer, Elma. She has 6 sons and one daughter and has a sort of open house with  people coming and going. Very very hospitable lady. One problem – she has a number of cats and I had to pretend to like them. One  got into my sleeping bag and another tried to sleep on my head.

We were left to our own devices whilst Elma went to work and I locked after me, throwing the key in through the open window, some of her children were still sleeping in the house. Close by were some shops I had coffee in a roadside cafe with a crepe like thing with fried egg and it cost about a pound. It reminded me of some of the roadside places in India with some very unsavoury looking characters sitting in huddled groups.

I eventually got over to the National Art gallery and found a couple of exhibitions (Cuban and Slovianian artists) of no interest whatsoeve. The National Theatre next door had something by young kids. So nothing there either. However this place looked like a miniature of the Sydney Opera house so who copied who?

Then a trek to the Central Market which was built in 1888 and had the usual craft stalls. I found a little pottery shop which a wonderful teaset which I would have taken it home if I was flying back. But I shall be back here to take the flight home one of these months. I have an invitation from Elma for her open day on 7 Nov but that is far too soon for me.

KL is interesting and has a good monolink system, once you get used to it. The buses were much more difficult and took me ages to get from one place to another assuming one knew where to get off. The traffic is terrible and I will be glad to get away. They tell me its much worse in Bangkok
